- The Bishopric of Utrecht (Dutch: Sticht Utrecht) was an ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire in the Low Countries, in the present-day Netherlands. From 1024 to 1528, as one of the prince-bishoprics of the Holy Roman Empire, it was ruled by the bishops of Utrecht. The Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht must not be confused with the Diocese of Utrecht, which extended beyond the Prince-Bishopric and over which the bishop exercised spiritual authority. In 1528, Charles V, secularized the Prince-Bishopric, depriving the bishop of its secular authority. (en)

Au XIe siècle, les évêques d'Utrecht obtiennent l'immédiateté impériale comme seigneurs temporels de la principauté épiscopale (Hochstift). Leur siège était la cathédrale Saint-Martin à Utrecht. Les frontières de la principauté et du diocèse d'Utrecht fondé en 695, suffragant de la province ecclésiastique de Cologne, ne coïncidaient pas. À la suite des troubles de la Réforme protestante, le dernier prince-évêque d'Utrecht cède son administration à l'empereur Charles Quint en 1528. - Het Sticht Utrecht (ook bekend als Het Sticht) was het territorium waarover de bisschoppen van Utrecht in de middeleeuwen als vorst de landsheerlijkheid uitoefenden. Een sticht was een gebied waar een abt of bisschop over regeerde. Utrecht was van 1024 tot 1528 een vorstendom binnen het Heilige Roomse Rijk. Dat wil zeggen dat de bisschop als rijksvorst en graaf ook heerlijke rechten had en dus ook wereldlijke macht bezat. Hij regeerde over:
* het Nedersticht, dat ruwweg overeenkwam met de huidige provincie Utrecht.
* het Oversticht, dat de huidige provincies Overijssel en Drenthe en de stad Groningen omvatte. Dit gebied moet onderscheiden worden van het bisdom Utrecht, waarover de Utrechtse bisschoppen geestelijk gezag uitoefenden. Dit gebied was veel uitgestrekter; het omvatte naast het genoemde Sticht de huidige provincies Friesland (met uitzondering van Achtkarspelen), Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland (zonder westelijk Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) en Gelderland (zonder delen van het graafschap Zutphen); terwijl de buurschap Markvelde in Twente politiek wel bij het Sticht behoorde, was het geestelijk deel van het bisdom Münster.
