- Stefaan Vaes (* 29. Februar 1976 in Herentals, Belgien) ist ein belgischer Mathematiker. Vaes studierte Mathematik an der Katholischen Universität Löwen mit dem Diplom 1998 und der Promotion bei 2001 (Locally Compact Quantum Groups). Als Post-Doktorand war er in Paris (wo er für das CNRS forschte) und lehrte danach an der KU Löwen, an der er 2009 eine volle Professur erhielt. Er war Gastprofessor an der Universität Paris VI und VII (an der er sich 2004 habilitierte). 2006 hatte er den Peccot-Lehrstuhl am College de France. 2010 war er Invited Speaker auf dem Internationalen Mathematikerkongress in Hyderabad (Indien) (Rigidity for von Neumann algebras and their invariants). Er befasst sich mit Von-Neumann-Algebren und Quantengruppen. 2015 erhielt er den Francqui-Preis. 2012 wurde er Fellow der American Mathematical Society. Zu seinen Doktoranden gehört Cyril Houdayer. - Stefaan Vaes (born February 29, 1976 in Herentals, Belgium) is a Belgian mathematician. Vaes studied mathematics at the KU Leuven with a diploma in 1998 and a PhD in 2001 with thesis advisor Alfons Van Daele and thesis Locally Compact Quantum Groups. As a postdoc he was from 1998 to 2002 at KU Leuven and from 1998 to 2002 in Paris, where he did research for CNRS. In 2002 he began part-time teaching at the KU Leuven, where he became an associate professor in 2006 and a full professor in 2009. He was a visiting professor in 2009 at Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) and in 2011 at Paris Diderot University (Paris VII) (where he habilitated in 2004). In 2005 he held the Peccot Chair at the Collège de France. His research deals with Von Neumann algebras and quantum groups. In 2010, Vaes was an Invited Speaker with talk Rigidity for von Neumann algebras and their invariants at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad. Vaes studeerde wiskunde aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, waar hij in 2001 doctoreerde met een studie naar lokaal compacte kwantumgroepen. Zijn promotor was Alfons Van Daele. In 2002 ging hij aan de slag als onderzoeker aan het Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu voor het Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Parijs. In 2006 werd hij hoofddocent aan de KU Leuven, in 2009 hoogleraar en in 2012 gewoon hoogleraar. In 2015 werd hij bekroond met de Francquiprijs, de hoogste Belgische wetenschappelijke onderscheiding. De jury, onder het voorzitterschap van David Gross, loofde zijn onderzoek naar von Neumann-algebra’s, waarvan de resultaten ook belangrijke gevolgen hebben voor andere domeinen van de wiskunde, zoals niet-commutatieve meetkunde.
