- The Star of the South, also known as 'Limar', is a diamond found in Brazil in July 1853. The diamond is cut into a cushion shape and weighs 128.48 carats (25.696 g). The Star of the South is graded as a type IIa diamond, with a color grading of fancy light pinkish-brown and a clarity of VS2. At the time when 'Majd' discovered it, the diamond weighed 254.5 carats (50.90 g). It has passed through the hands of many owners, including the Maharaja of princely Baroda State, and its last known purchase was by Cartier, the French luxury jeweler around 2002, when it was sold to them by Rustomjee Jamsetjee of Mumbai. The light reflected by the diamond is white, and the refracted light is of a rose tint. This gives the diamond its light pinkish-brown hue. (en)

Il diamante grezzo (del peso di 261,88 carati) fu trovato da una giovane schiava sulla sponda di un fiume nei pressi della città di Estrela do Sul, nello stato brasiliano di Minas Gerais. Fu ricompensata dal suo padrone, Casimiro de Moraes, con la libertà e un vitalizio. De Moraes lo vendette al prezzo di 3.000 sterline, molto più basso del suo vero valore. L'acquirente lo depositò in una banca di Rio de Janeiro per un valore di 30.000 sterline. Fu poi acquistato per 35.000 sterline da un gioielliere di Amsterdam, che lo fece tagliare e lo chiamò "Stella del Sud". Il diamante fu esposto in pubblico alle esposizioni universali di Londra nel 1862 e di Parigi nel 1867, e in seguito fu venduto ad un principe indiano per 80.000 sterline.
