- Standing on a Beach: The Singles (titrée Staring at the Sea: The Singles au format CD) est une compilation du groupe anglais The Cure, sortie le 6 mai 1986. Elle rassemble, dans son format vinyle, tous les singles du groupe de ses débuts à 1985, au nombre de treize. La version CD, titrée Staring at the Sea: The Singles, comporte quatre chansons supplémentaires qui n'ont pas fait l'objet de singles mais bénéficient chacune d'un clip vidéo que l'on retrouve sur la cassette vidéo sortie simultanément, Staring at the Sea: The Images.La version cassette audio comprend les singles ainsi que douze titres supplémentaires sortis en face B. Le titre de la compilation provient du premier morceau, Killing an Arab, qui est inspiré d'un épisode du roman L'Étranger d'Albert Camus paru en 1942. Cette chanson débute par les vers « Standing on a beach with a gun in my hand, staring at the sea, staring at the sand... ». A la fin de cette chanson, le chanteur dit de façon quasi inaudible «Meursault», le narrateur du roman. Cette compilation connut un réel succès dans les classements du monde entier, entrant notamment dans les 50 premiers du Billboard 200 aux États-Unis où The Cure devenait alors une valeur sûre de la musique new wave/rock alternatif. La versión casete incluye doce "caras B" que no entraron en el LP original. Los dos títulos seleccionados para este recopilatorio se extraen de la letra de «Killing an Arab». En la portada del álbum aparece fotografiado John Button. Era un pescador jubilado que accedió a prestar su imagen para "ayudar a estos jóvenes a abrirse paso", como declaró y por un sentido estético con el que el grupo quería dotar a la recopilación. Fue el mismo que protagonizó el videoclip de «Killing an Arab» y acabaría declarando también que se iba a comprar un reproductor estéreo tan solo "por curiosidad, sólo para ver". (es)

The album's titles are both taken from the opening lyrics of the Cure's debut single, "Killing an Arab". The "New Voice - New Mix" of "Boys Don't Cry" (released as a single little over a fortnight before Standing on a Beach) was not included on the album; thus the album's singles span only from 1978 to 1985. The version of "A Forest" here is neither the album version (which was also on the 12" single), nor is it the 7" single edit (which removes a few bars between verses and fades out part way through the guitar solo ending). The album was critically acclaimed. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "one of the finest albums of the '80s". (en)
