Houve uma evolução positiva destes indicadores na última década, especialmente em relação ao aumento da expectativa de vida, queda da mortalidade infantil, acesso a saneamento básico, coleta de lixo e diminuição da taxa de analfabetismo. Apesar da melhora desses índices, há nítidas diferenças regionais, especialmente em relação ao nível de renda.
