- Richard Grenville (15 de junio de 1542-10 de septiembre de 1591) (alias Greynvile, Greeneville, Greenfield, etc.), señor de los feudos de , Kilkhampton en Cornualles y de Bideford en Devon, era un marinero inglés que, como capitán del Revenge, murió en la batalla de Flores, posiblemente por negarse a entregar su barco a los españoles, mucho más numerosos. Grenville también era un soldado, propietario de una flota mercante armada, corsario, colonizador y explorador. Tomó parte en los primeros intentos ingleses de establecer colonias en el Nuevo Mundo, y también participó en la lucha contra la Armada Española. Sus trabajos no militares incluyeron ser miembro del parlamento para Cornwall, alto sheriff del condado de Cork a partir de 1569-70 y sheriff de Cornwall en 1576-77. - Sir Richard Grenville (15 June 1542 – 10 September 1591), also spelt Greynvile, Greeneville, and Greenfield, was an English privateer and explorer. Grenville was lord of the manors of Stowe, Cornwall and Bideford, Devon. He subsequently participated in the plantations of Ireland, the English colonisation of the Americas and the repulse of the Spanish Armada. Grenville also served as Member of Parliament for Cornwall, High Sheriff for County Cork and Sheriff of Cornwall. In 1591, Grenville died at the battle of Flores fighting against an overwhelmingly larger Spanish fleet near the Azores. He and his crew on board the galleon Revenge fought against the 53-strong Spanish fleet to allow the other English ships to escape. Grenville was the grandfather of Sir Bevil Grenville, a prominent military officer during the English Civil War. (en)

Grenville podjął karierę wojskową i uczestniczył w na Węgrzech (1566–1568), następnie służył w Irlandii. W 1576 roku mianowany został szeryfem Kornwalii i otrzymał tytuł szlachecki. W 1585 roku Grenville stanął na czele pierwszej angielskiej ekspedycji kolonialnej do Ameryki Północnej. Dowodzona przez niego flota siedmiu statków zabrała na pokład 115 osadników, którzy założyli kolonię na wyspie Roanoke, u wybrzeża Karoliny Północnej; rok później kolonia została opuszczona. W 1588 roku Grenville dostarczył trzy okręty, które weszły w skład floty admirała Charlesa Howarda, która przeciwstawiła się hiszpańskiej Wielkiej Armadzie.
