Erzählt wird die Geschichte von vier jungen Menschen (Mark, Robbie, Lulu und Gary), die einer Welt ohne Mitleid und Orientierung ausgeliefert sind, und kritisiert die kapitalistische Welt, in der Menschen Waren sind wie alles andere, und die Macht des Geldes es ermöglicht, den eigenen Tod in Szene zu setzen. Aspekte des Konsumverhaltens und der Sexualität, die in der Populärkultur weit verbreitet sind, tauchen in dem Stück immer wieder auf: Drogen, Ladendiebstahl, Telefonsex, Prostitution, Analsex und Oralsex im Londoner Kaufhaus Harvey Nichols, Liebe, Bisexualität und Homosexualität. Die Figuren Mark, Robbie und Gary gelten dabei als klassische Verkörperung des homosexuellen Untergrunds. Das erste abendfüllende Stück des Autors wurde im Oktober 1996 im Londoner Royal Court Theatre uraufgeführt. Die Aufführungsrechte der deutschen Fassung liegen bei der Rowohlt Theaterverlag GmbH, Reinbek. In französischer Sprache ist das Stück beim Verlag Les Solitaires intempestifs in einer Übersetzung von Jean-Marc Lanteri erschienen. (de)

It received its first public reading at the Finborough Theatre, London, in 1995. It was performed in 1996 at the Royal Court Upstairs (located temporarily at the Ambassadors Theatre in London's West End), before embarking on a national and international tour, co-produced by Out of Joint and the Royal Court Theatre. When first produced, Shopping and Fucking received mixed reviews. Some were shocked by the play's sexually violent content, which includes the pseudo-rape of an underage male by other males. Other critics were drawn to the play's black humour, and its mixture of Sadean and Marxist philosophies. Along with Sarah Kane's Blasted, it was a prime exemplar of British in-yer-face theatre of the 1990s. (en)
