- La palabra Minuteman o Minutemen tiene su origen en la fundación de Estados Unidos en los tiempos de las Trece Colonias, a la llegada de los ingleses al continente americano. La palabra quiere decir hombres al minuto, dando a entender que en esos tiempos de colonización, tenían una milicia de extranjeros, o nacidos de primera generación europea, listos para pelear por las tierras ya ganadas a los nativos, así les avisaran en cuestión de minutos. El término también se ha asociado con varias unidades militares del ejército estadounidense, en honor a las victorias de los minuteman originales. Con estas mismas premisas, un grupo de ciudadanos estadounidenses concibieron el Proyecto Minuteman, en abril de 2005 para disuadir y bloquear las travesías de indocumentados por la frontera de Estados Unidos y México. Además de vigilar físicamente la frontera, se unen en protesta política y a otras formas de activismo contra las manifestaciones cívicas de hispanos estadounidenses en las calles. El proyecto se ha ampliado para incluir la frontera común entre Estados Unidos y Canadá.El nombre viene de los Minutemen que lucharon en la revolución estadounidense en el siglo XVIII. - The Minuteman Project is an organization which was founded in the United States in August 2004 by a group of private individuals who sought to extrajudicially monitor the United States–Mexico border's flow of illegal immigrants. Founded by Jim Gilchrist and Chris Simcox, the organization's name is derived from the name of the Minutemen, militiamen who fought in the American Revolution. The Minuteman Project describes itself as "a citizens' Neighborhood Watch on our border", and it has attracted the attention of the media due to its focus on the issue of illegal immigration. In addition to border watching, the Minuteman Project created a political action committee which lobbied for representatives who supported proactive immigration law enforcement and focused on resolving border security issues. Members of the Minuteman Project believe that government officials have failed to protect the country from the threat of invasion by foreign enemies. They strongly support building a wall and placing additional border patrol agents or military personnel on the Mexico–United States border to curb free movement across it. Roughly half of the Minuteman Project's members strongly oppose amnesty as well as a guest worker program, and an overwhelming number of them oppose sending funds to Mexico to pay for the improvement of its infrastructure. - Het Minutemanproject (Engels: Minuteman Project) is de naam van een Amerikaanse groepering, of eigenlijk twee groeperingen, die pogen aan de grens tussen Mexico en de Verenigde Staten Mexicaanse migranten tegen te houden. De vereniging dankt haar naam aan de Minutemen, de militie die tijdens de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog de Britten bevocht. Het project is opgericht in april 2005 door conservatieve Amerikanen die menen dat de Amerikaanse regering niet genoeg doet om illegale immigratie uit Mexico te stoppen, en daarom het heft in eigen handen namen. In december dat jaar viel de beweging uiteen in twee groeperingen, de Minuteman Civil Defense Corps en The Minuteman Project Inc., na onenigheden over de financiering. De eerste groep wordt geleid door , de tweede door . Het project is voornamelijk actief in Californië en Arizona, maar heeft ook gepatrouilleerd aan andere delen van de grens en zelfs enkele keren aan de grens met Canada. Ook volgens de Anti-Defamation League onderhoudt het Minuteman Project banden met neonazi's. De groep is ook veroordeeld door de Southern Poverty Law Center, de American Civil Liberties Union en de Mexicaanse mensenrechtencommissie. De Amerikaanse president George W. Bush heeft te kennen gegeven 'volksgerichten' (vigilantes) niet op prijs te stellen. De voormalige president van Mexico, Vicente Fox, heeft vergelijkbare geluiden laten horen.
