Afridi gab 2011 im Auftrag der CIA vor, eine Impfkampagne gegen Hepatitis B durchzuführen, um auf die Wohnanlage von Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad zu gelangen und dessen Anwesenheit durch DNA-Proben zu bestätigen. Der Zugriff auf bin Laden erfolgte am 2. Mai 2011. Afridi versuchte danach, das Land über den Grenzübergang bei Torcham zu verlassen, wo er verhaftet wurde. Man legte ihm Verbindungen zu Lashkar-e-Islam zur Last und verurteilte ihn am 23. Mai 2012 zu 33 Jahren Gefängnis. (de)
- Shakil Afridi (né en 1962) est un médecin pakistanais qui aurait aidé la CIA à organiser une fausse campagne de vaccination à Abbottabad au Pakistan, dans le but de confirmer la présence d'Oussama ben Laden en obtenant des échantillons ADN. Il est originaire de l'agence de Khyber, dans les régions tribales. Il est diplômé de médecine d'une faculté de Peshawar. Après la mort d'Oussama ben Laden le 2 mai 2011, il est arrêté alors qu'il tentait de rejoindre l'Afghanistan via les régions tribales. Accusé d'avoir trahi le Pakistan, et en particulier les services de renseignements (Inter-Services Intelligence), il est condamné à 33 ans de prison en mai 2012.

- Shakil Afridi (Urdu: شکیل آفریدی), or Shakeel Afridi, is a Pakistani physician who allegedly helped the CIA run a fake hepatitis vaccine program in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, in order to confirm Osama bin Laden's presence in the city by obtaining DNA samples. Details of his activities emerged during the Pakistani investigation of the deadly raid on bin Laden's residence.This account is disputed in a recent account of events which implies Afridi was implicated as a cover for the real CIA operative.Afridi was arrested at the Torkham border crossing while trying to flee the country days after the raid. On 23 May 2012, he was sentenced to 33 years' imprisonment for treason, initially believed to be in connection with the bin Laden raid, but later revealed to be due to alleged ties with a local Islamist warlord Mangal Bagh. Lawyers appealed against the verdict on 1 June 2012. On 29 August 2013, his sentence was overturned and a retrial ordered. In mid-November 2013, he was charged with murder in regard to the death of a patient he had treated eight years previously. During PM Imran Khan's visit to Washington DC, in July 2019, in his interview with an American Channel he indicated Shakil Afridi could be released in exchange for Aafia Siddiqui. (en)
