The album's production posed a challenge to the label, as its marketing situation drew arguments over its explicitness; to give them time to decide over its style, the band released the live album Decade of Aggression. Since it was released nearly four years after its predecessor Seasons in the Abyss (1990), vocalist Tom Araya said there was more time spent on its production compared to the band's previous albums. Divine Intervention was the band's first album to feature Paul Bostaph, replacing original drummer Dave Lombardo. Its songs' origins came not only from television shows, but were also inspired by various other subjects including Rush Limbaugh, Holocaust architect Reinhard Heydrich, and serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Its cover artwork was painted and designed by Wes Benscoter as a re-imaging of the band's early "Slayergram" graphic. Although so much time was spent on its production, Kerry King has expressed his disapproval over the album's final mix, saying it should have had more attention. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Divine Intervention peaked at number eight on the US Billboard 200 and number 15 on the UK Albums Chart, selling over 93,000 copies in its first week of sales. Divine Intervention alcanzó el octavo puesto del Billboard en su primera semana, lo que se convirtió en la posición más alta que había alcanzado un disco de la banda hasta la edición de Christ Illusion en 2006, que llegó al quinto lugar de la misma lista. Casi toda la música de la obra fue compuesta por el guitarrista Kerry King. Por su parte, el disco incluía una foto de la muñeca de un fan de la banda, que tenía marcado a cuchillo el logo de Slayer. La parte exterior de la caja del CD de las primera ediciones del disco contenía una especie de cuchilla con la forma de la S de Slayer, por lo que se supuso en su momento que fue con esta arma con la que el fan se marcó las muñecas. Zadebiutował na 8 miejscu listy Billboard 200, Divine Intervention stał się najwyżej uplasowanym albumem w historii zespołu do czasu Christ Illusion, który zadebiutował na miejscu 5. Według danych z kwietnia 2002 album sprzedał się w nakładzie 405 092 egzemplarzy na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych. Jest to płyta zagrana po raz pierwszy w zmienionym składzie po odejściu perkusisty Dave’a Lombardo.
