Использовавшаяся для хозяйственных целей самоходная баржа проекта Т-4 под номером «T-36» 17 января 1960 года около 9 часов утра по местному времени во время сильного шторма была сорвана со швартовки в заливе острова Итуруп. После безуспешных попыток удержаться в заливе и израсходования запасов топлива в ночь с 17 на 18 января её стало относить ветром и морским течением в открытый океан. За период дрейфа баржа была отнесена от острова на расстояние свыше 1700 км. 7 марта дрейфующие были обнаружены и спасены экипажем американского авианосца «Кирсардж».
