- Übliche im Bauwesen verwendete Sandwichkonstruktionen bestehen aus zwei dünnen Metalldeckschichten, die über einen Dämmstoffkern schubfest miteinander verbunden sind. In den allermeisten Fällen handelt es sich um einen Kern aus Polyurethanschaum (PUR) oder Mineralwolle (MW). Durch den Verbund (Haftung oder Verklebung) der Deckschichten mit dem schubsteifen Kern ergibt sich für das Sandwichpaneel eine hohe Tragfähigkeit und eine große Steifigkeit. Für die Berechnung der Tragfähigkeit von Sandwichpaneelen kommt die lineare Sandwichtheorie zur Anwendung. Sandwichelemente werden auf kontinuierlich arbeitenden Fertigungsanlagen produziert und auf Bestelllänge gesägt. Die Oberflächen sind je nach Kundenwunsch mit Linierung, Trapez- oder Wellprofilierungen erhältlich. Sie werden sowohl als Dach- als auch als Wandelemente hergestellt. Sandwichelemente können mit einer sichtbaren Befestigung aber auch mit einer nicht sichtbaren Befestigung produziert werden. Die nicht sichtbare Befestigung erlaubt architektonisch ansprechende Fassaden, deren Optik nicht durch Schraubenreihen gestört wird. Die sehr guten Dämmeigenschaften verbunden mit der Systemvielfalt, der Qualität und der anspruchsvollen Optik haben zu einer immer größeren Verbreitung dieser Bauelemente geführt. Sandwichkonstruktionen sind schnell zu montieren und werden vor allem im Dach und Wandbereich von Industrie-, Büro- und Verwaltungsgebäuden und Kühllagern verwendet. Derzeit werden pro Jahr in Deutschland ca. 20 Mio. m² Sandwichpaneele verlegt. Im gesamteuropäischen Raum sind es mehr als 100 Mio. m². Je nach Elementdicke können U-Werte bis zu 0,12 W/(m²K) erzielt werden. Die Stützweiten betragen in Abhängigkeit von dem Elementtyp bis zu 11 m (Wand). Der normale Einsatzbereich liegt bei ca. 3 m bis 5 m Stützweite. Die bewerteten Schalldämmmaße liegen für PUR-Elemente bei ca. 25 dB und für MW-Elemente bei ca. 28 – 33 dB. Stahlsandwichelemente mit Polyurethan haben in verschiedenen Brandversuchen bewiesen, dass sie nicht zum Brandgeschehen beitragen. Auch von der Versicherungswirtschaft werden diese Elemente insgesamt positiv bewertet. Mineralwoll-Sandwichelemente sind für die unterschiedlichsten Brandschutzanforderungen bis zur Feuerwiderstandsklasse EI240 erhältlich. Im Rahmen des Großbrandes des Grenfell Tower im Juni 2017 in London wurde die Verwendung von Sandwichpaneelen im Brandschutz thematisiert. Beim Grenfell Tower waren jedoch keine Sandwichelemente eingesetzt worden, sondern Aluminium-Verbundplatten (ACP) mit zwei Aluminiumdeckschalen und einem dünnen Kern aus Polyethylen. (de)
- A sandwich panel is any structure made of three layers: a low-density core (PIR, mineral wool, XPS), and a thin skin-layer bonded to each side. Sandwich panels are used in applications where a combination of high structural rigidity and low weight is required. The structural functionality of a sandwich panel is similar to the classic I-beam, where two face sheets primarily resist the in-plane and lateral bending loads(similar to flanges of an I- beam), while the core material mainly resists the shear loads (similar to the web of an I-beam). The idea is to use a light/soft but thick layer for the core and strong but thin layers for face sheets. This results in increasing the overall thickness of the panel, which often improves the structural attributes, like bending stiffness, and maintain or even reduce the weight. Sandwich panels are an example of a sandwich structured composite: the strength and lightness of this technology makes it popular and widespread. Its versatility means that the panels have many applications and come in many forms: the core and skin materials can vary widely and the core may be a honeycomb or a solid filling.
