- Sándor Weöres (22. června 1913 Szombathely – 22. ledna 1989 Budapešť) byl maďarský básník a překladatel. Narodil se v Szombathely, vyrůstal ale v nedaleké vesnici Csönge. První básně publikoval již ve čtrnácti letech, když je přijal Mihály Babits k otištění ve vlivném časopise Nyugat. Weöres pak navštěvoval univerzitu v Pécsi, nejprve studoval právo, poté přešel na geografii a historii. Nakonec získal doktorát z filozofie a estetiky. Jeho disertační práce Zrození básně byla publikována v roce 1939. V roce 1937 uskutečnil první ze svých cest do zahraničí, nejdříve do Manily na eucharistický kongres a poté navštívil Vietnam a Indii. Zde se seznámil s východními filozofiemi, které ho silně ovlivnily. Během druhé světové války byl povolán k nuceným pracím, ale nebyl poslán na frontu. Po skončení války se vrátil do Csönge a krátce pracoval jako zemědělec. V roce 1948 znovu vycestoval do zahraničí a do roku 1949 pobýval v Itálii. V roce 1951 se usadil v Budapešti, kde pobýval po zbytek svého života. Nástup stalinismu v Maďarsku po roce 1948 Weörese umlčel, neboť odmítl tvořit ve vyžadovaném uměleckém směru - socialistickém realismu. Do roku 1964 mohl publikovat jen výjimečně. Věnoval se v té době zejména překladům, překládal do maďarštiny Tarase Ševčenka, Šotu Rustaveliho, Otona Župančiče, Edwarda Leara, Lewise Carrolla nebo Stéphana Mallarmého. Přeložil také například Shakespearova Jindřicha VIII., Pustou zemi T. S. Eliota nebo Tao te ťing. Od vydání sbírky Tűzkút v roce 1964 začal být režimem tolerován. V roce 1970 obdržel Kossuthovu cenu. Za čtyři roky poté Rakouskou státní cenu za evropskou literaturu. Mnoho Weöresových básní bylo zhudebněno, například Zoltánem Kodálym nebo György Ligetim, osobním přítelem básníka. V roce 1980 maďarský filmař natočil film na motivy patrně nejslavnější Weöresovy básně Psyché, pod názvem Nárcisz és Psyché. (cs)

Born in Szombathely, Weöres was brought up in the nearby village of Csönge. His first poems were published when he was fourteen, in the influential journal Nyugat ("West"), through the acceptance of its editor, the poet Mihály Babits. Weöres attended the University of Pécs, first studying law before moving on to geography and history. He ultimately received a doctorate in philosophy and aesthetics. His doctoral dissertation The Birth of the Poem was published in 1939. It was in 1937 that he made the first of his travels abroad, going first to Manila for a Eucharistic Congress and then visiting Vietnam and India. During World War II Weöres was drafted for compulsory labor, but was not sent to the front. After the end of the war, he returned to Csönge and briefly lived as a farmer. In 1948 Weöres again travelled abroad, living in Italy until 1949. In 1951 he settled in Budapest where he would reside for the rest of his life. The imposition of Stalinism in Hungary after 1948 silenced Weöres and until 1964 little of his work could be published. (en)

Han blev publicerad redan som 16-åring och etablerade sig genom litteraturtidskriften Nyugat. Weöres gjorde ingen skillnad mellan form och innehåll och sökte sig till ämnen som inte kunde avhandlas som politiska eller samhälleliga frågor. På 1940-talet använde han automatism och gav ut nonsensdikter, både egna och översättningar av Edward Lear och Lewis Carroll. När Ungerska arbetarpartiet tog makten 1949 stämplades Weöres som nihilist på grund av sin opolitiskhet och på 1950-talet fick han publiceringsförbud. Han fortsatte dock att skriva, inspirerad av mytologi och av T.S. Eliots Det öde landet, som han översatte till ungerska. I början av 1970-talet blev regimen mer tolerant inför Weöres och hans samlade verk kunde ges ut 1970. År 1972 släppte han hybridverket Psyche, som filmatiserades 1980 av Gábor Bódy som Nárcisz és Psyché. Till hans kändaste verk i Ungern hör även en rad populära barnramsor.
