- Sally ist eine Musical Comedy, die Florenz Ziegfeld für den Star seiner Revue Ziegfeld Follies of 1918, Marilyn Miller produzierte. Er beauftragte Jerome Kern für die Komposition der Musik und Guy Bolton für das Verfassen eines Buches. Als Vorlage diente eine nicht realisierte Princess Theatre-Show von Bolton und P. G. Wodehouse. Die Gesangstexte stammen im Wesentlichen von Clifford Grey. Des Weiteren fanden zwei Songs aus einem misslungenen Musical Verwendung, die Kern mit Buddy DeSylva geschrieben hatte, darunter der Hit der Show, Look for the Silver Lining. Eine zusätzliche Ballettnummer wurde von Victor Herbert komponiert. Die Uraufführung fand am 21. Dezember 1920 im New Amsterdam Theatre in New York statt. Der Erfolg war außerordentlich; das Stück erreichte 585 Vorstellungen, die bis dahin längste Laufzeit einer Broadway-Show.Im Londoner West End wurde das Musical am 10. G. Wodehouse. The plot hinges on a mistaken-identity: Sally, a waif, is a dishwasher at the Alley Inn. She poses as a famous foreign ballerina and rises to fame (and finds love) through joining the Ziegfeld Follies. There is a rags to riches story, a ballet as a centrepiece, and a wedding as a finale. "Look for the Silver Lining" continues to be one of Kern's most familiar songs. The song is lampooned by another song, "Look for a Sky of Blue," in Rick Besoyan's satirical 1959 musical Little Mary Sunshine. The piece was first produced by Florenz Ziegfeld on Broadway in 1920 and ran for 570 performances, one of the longest runs on Broadway up to that time. The show was designed as a debut star vehicle for Marilyn Miller. It had a successful London run and was revived several times on Broadway and in the West End. Since World War II, it has had few productions. The musical was adapted into a 1925 silent film and a 1929 musical film. (en)

La trama è imperniata su uno scambio di identità: Sally, una derelitta, lavora come lavapiatti all'Alley Inn. Ella si atteggia a ballerina straniera, trovando la fama e l'amore fino ad arrivare alle Follie di Ziegfeld. Nella trama vi sono miserie e ricchezze, balletti ed un matrimonio come finale.
