- Le SS Montanan est un cargo construit en 1912 pour l'American-Hawaiian Steamship Company. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il sert comme navire de transport de l'armée des États-Unis dans l'Army Transport Service, sous l’appellation USAT Montanan. Le Montanan est construit par la Maryland Steel Company pour l'American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, tout comme huit sisterships. Après sa mise en service, il est employé dans le service inter-côtier via l'isthme de Tehuantepec et le canal de Panama après son ouverture. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, l'USAT Montanan transporte des fournitures et des animaux vers la France. Il participe au premier convoi américain à naviguer vers la France après l’entrée en guerre des États-Unis en avril 1917. Alors qu’il fait route vers la France en août 1918, l’USAT Montanan est torpillé et coulé par le SM U-90 à quelque 500 milles nautiques (900 km) au large des côtes françaises. Sur les 86 hommes à bord du navire, 81 sont sauvés par des navires de l'escorte mais les cinq autres meurent dans l’attaque. (fr)

Montanan was built by the Maryland Steel Company as one of eight sister ships for the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, and was employed in inter-coastal service via the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Panama Canal after it opened. In World War I, USAT Montanan carried cargo and animals to France, and was in the first American convoy to sail to France after the United States entered the war in April 1917. USAT Montanan was torpedoed and sunk by U-90 500 nmi (900 km) west of Le Verdon-sur-Mer, France, while it took part in another eastbound convoy in August 1918, Of the 86 men aboard the ship, 81 were rescued by a convoy escort; five men died in the attack.
