She was initially used in transatlantic service alongside SS Cristoforo Colombo, and primarily for cruising after the delivery of the new SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello in 1965. In 1976 the Leonardo da Vinci became the last Italian Line passenger liner to be used in service across the North Atlantic. Between 1977 and 1978 she was used as a cruise ship by Italia Crociere, but was laid up from 1978 onwards until 1982 when she was scrapped. Named after the famous Italian inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci, the ship featured numerous technological innovations, including provisions for conversion to run on nuclear power. (en)

Na enige tijd werd het teruggehaald naar La Spezia en te koop aangeboden. Op 3 juli 1980 brak er brand uit in de scheepskapel. Omdat de brandweer het vuur niet onder controle kreeg werd het schip de haven uitgesleept om daar uit te branden. Het schip kapseisde en brandde nog drie dagen. Het schip werd uiteindelijk geborgen in maart 1980 en gesloopt in 1981. (nl)

Koncepcja konstrukcyjna "Leonardo da Vinci" była kontynuacją nowej architektury okrętowej tzw. "szkoły włoskiej". Statek wyruszył w podróż dziewiczą z Genui przez Neapol i Cannes do Nowego Jorku w lipcu 1960 roku. Wszystkie kabiny posiadały pełną klimatyzację z własną regulacją. Na pokładzie funkcjonowała radiowa rozgłośnia pokładowa nadająca trzy różne programy i po raz pierwszy pokładowe studio telewizyjne (nadające audycje z zewnątrz oraz ze statku). Na rufie statku znajdowały się ułożone tarasowo trzy baseny ze sztucznymi "plażami" zwane potocznie "lido". Statek dysponował również nowocześnie wyposażonym szpitalem i własną redakcją i drukarnią wydającą dziennik "Corriere del Mare / Kurier Morski". Ze względu na rosnącą konkurencję transatlantyckich połączeń lotniczych statek przeszedł na linię południowoamerykańską. W dniu 4 lipca 1980 roku na wycofanym z eksploatacji statku wybuchł pożar, który w ciągu czterech dni strawił go w całości, powodując w końcu przewrócenie się wypalonego kadłuba. (pl)
