En 1977, il franchit le passage du Nord-Ouest aux commandes du J.E. Bernier II, un voilier de plaisance de 11 mètres. Le J.E. Bernier II était à son époque le plus petit navire à avoir franchi le passage du Nord-Ouest, voyage réalisé pendant les trois périodes estivales de 1976 à 1978, et le premier voilier de plaisance à avoir fait le tour de l'Amérique du Nord, un trajet de 18 500 milles marins. In 1977, he crossed the Northwest Passage, from east to west, in command of JE Bernier II, a sailing boat of 10.5 meters. The JE Bernier II remains the smallest vessel to have made the crossing in one season and the first sailing boat to have circumnavigated North America, a journey of 18,500 nautical miles. JE Bouvier did not complete the northwest passage in one season as the passage is only completed upon reaching the Pacific. Not to mention that Bouvier also wintered on passage in Greenland. Thus the voyage took three seasons not one. (en)
