The park touches neighboring Tanzania to the south, the valley of the Ruvubu River whose landscape dominates this area. The Ruvubu National Park gets its name from the Ruvubu River which runs through the length of the park. The park is the last vestige of the natural grassland ecosystem which once covered the vast majority of the northeast part of Burundi. It is home to a number of wildlife species, most notably hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, Cape buffalo, waterbuck, numerous duiker species, five primate species, including olive baboon, vervet monkey, red colobus monkey, blue monkey, and Senegal bushbaby. Nationalparken instiftades 3 mars 1980 och är sedan 9 maj 2007 uppsatt på landets tentativa världsarvslista. Nationalparken ligger i den centrala delen av landet, 110 kilometer öster om huvudstaden Bujumbura. Den ligger 1 361 meter över havet. Terrängen i Ruvubu nationalpark är huvudsakligen kuperad, men den allra närmaste omgivningen är platt. Ruvubu nationalpark ligger nere i en dal. Den högsta punkten i närheten är 1 624 meter över havet, 2,5 kilometer sydost om nationalparkens centrum. Runt Ruvubu nationalpark är det ganska tätbefolkat, med 111 invånare per kvadratkilometer..
