- Rudolph Cartier, né Rudolph Katscher à Vienne le 17 avril 1904 et mort à Londres le 7 juin 1994, est un réalisateur, producteur de cinéma et scénariste autrichien. Rudolph Cartier fit des études théâtrales, puis d'architecture. Il commença sa carrière cinématographique comme scénariste et réalisateur de films allemands à Berlin pour les studios Universum Film AG ainsi que réalisateur pour la télévision autrichienne. Encouragé par un collègue des studios allemands, Billy Wilder, de venir à Hollywood, Rudolph Katscher change de nom et prend celui de Rudolph Cartier. Cependant, contrairement à Billy Wilder, Cartier n'a pas trouvé le succès aux États-Unis, et en 1935 il déménage à nouveau, pour le Royaume-Uni. Il s'installa en Angleterre dans les années 1930. Ce n'est que bien plus tard, en 1952, qu'il travailla pour la télévision britannique, exclusivement pour la BBC. Il est surtout connu pour ses collaborations avec le scénariste Nigel Kneale, notamment pour la série Bernard Quatermass et de l'adaptation du roman 1984 de George Orwell. Il réalisa plus de 120 films. En l'an 2000, le British Film Institute sélectionna les cent plus grands programmes télévisuels, parmi lesquels deux films réalisés par Rudolph Cartier. (fr)

Es conocido por sus colaboraciones en los años 1950 con el guionista Nigel Kneale, entre las que destacan la saga televisiva de Quatermass y la y la adaptación de 1954 de la novela de George Orwell 1984. Luego de estudiar arquitectura y drama, inició su carrera como guionista y más tarde como director de cine en Berlín, trabajando para Universum Film AG. Tras residir un tiempo en los Estados Unidos, se mudó al Reino Unido en los años 1930 y comenzó a trabajar con BBC Television en 1952. Produjo y dirigió más de 120 producciones en 24 años y terminó su carrera televisiva con la obra Loyalties en 1976. Activo tanto en programas dramáticos como en ópera, Cartier ganó un en 1957 por su trabajo en televisión y una de sus producciones de ópera obtuvo un premio en el Festival de Salzburgo de 1962. - Rudolph Cartier (born Rudolph Kacser, renamed himself in Germany to Rudolph Katscher; 17 April 1904 – 7 June 1994) was an Austrian television director, filmmaker, screenwriter and producer who worked predominantly in British television, exclusively for the BBC. He is best known for his 1950s collaborations with screenwriter Nigel Kneale, most notably the Quatermass serials and their 1954 adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. After studying architecture and then drama, Cartier began his career as a screenwriter and then film director in Berlin, working for UFA Studios. After a brief spell in the United States he moved to the United Kingdom in 1935. Initially failing to gain a foothold in the British film industry, he began working for BBC Television in the late 1930s (among other productions he was involved in the making of Rehearsal for a Drama, BBC 1939). The outbreak of war, however, meant that his contract was terminated; his television play The Dead Eye was stopped in the production stage. After the war, he occasionally worked for British films before he was again hired by the BBC in 1952. He soon became one of the public service broadcaster's leading directors and went on to produce and direct over 120 productions in the next 24 years, ending his television career with the play Loyalties in 1976. Active in both dramatic programming and opera, Cartier won the equivalent of a BAFTA in 1957 for his work in the former, and one of his operatic productions was given an award at the 1962 Salzburg Festival. The British Film Institute's "Screenonline" website describes him as "a true pioneer of television", while the critic Peter Black once wrote that: "Nobody was within a mile of Rudolph Cartier in the trick of making a picture on a TV screen seem as wide and as deep as CinemaScope."
