- Robin Lynn Holcomb is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who combines avant-garde jazz, classical music, and folk music. The New York Times described her music as "a new American regionalism, spun from many threads – country rock, minimalism, Civil War songs, Baptist hymns, Appalachian folk tunes, even the polytonal music of Charles Ives. The music that results is as elegantly simple as a Shaker quilt, and no less beautiful." Despite her eclectic output, she has said that she doesn't try to "genre mash" intentionally "...it just kind of comes up because it's what's in the air. I am drawn repeatedly to hymn-type harmonies. I was fascinated by Civil-War songs when I was a kid. I come back to those things." She also describes her style as "minimalism without being a minimalist...when I write poetry, I go for the fewest words that evoke a lot or let the readers connect the dots, or relate it to their own experience, and the same with music." Holcomb began playing professionally in New York, in an avant-garde scene that involved her future husband Wayne Horvitz as well as John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, and Eugene Chadbourne. Her work during that period was recorded in the 1988 album, Larks, They Crazy. Her subsequent albums focus more on songwriting. (en)

- Robin Holcomb (...) è una cantante e compositrice statunitense. Nata in una famiglia povera della Georgia si trasferì in California in cerca di fortuna. Studiò musica all'Università della California dove conobbe il suo futuro marito, il compositore e pianista Wayne Horvitz. La coppia si trasferì a New York dove entrò a far parte della "downtown scene" con un proprio gruppo: i White Noise. Più tardi i due fondarono la , il cui album d'esordio Todos Santos del 1988 (Sound Aspects) fu interamente composto dall'artista. L'anno seguente esordì da solista con l'album Larks They Crazy accompagnata oltre che dal marito anche da e (clarinet, sax), (contrabbasso e tuba), (batteria). Nell'album, prevalentemente frutto del lavoro di improvvisazione, vi è solo una traccia cantata: la title track. L'artista si è poi dedicata alla messa in musica dell'opera La tempesta di Shakespeare ed al concerto di lieder Angels at the Four Corners a cui hanno partecipato Syd Straw, Peter Blegvad e . Si trasferisce a Seattle. Nel successivo album da solista, l'omonimo Robin Holcomb, fu accompagnata da al clarinetto e al sax, da al basso, da alle percussioni e da Bill Frisell alle chitarre. Secondo il critico Piero Scaruffi questo album ha pochi rivali nella canzone d'autore femminile. Due anni dopo esce Rockabye per la Elektra accompagnata con una formazione diversa e dallo stile meno sperimentale del precedente. Little Three del 1996 fu un lavoro quasi interamente strumentale.
