Byl schopen přednášet v šesti jazycích. V textové lingvistice je hojně citovaná práce Einführung in die Textlinguistik (Úvod do textové lingvistiky, 1981, anglicky vyšlo jako Introduction to Text Linguistic v témže roce, překlad Beaugrande), kterou sepsal spolu s Wolfgangem U. - Robert-Alain de Beaugrande (* 1946; † Juni 2008) war ein österreichischer Linguist. Beaugrande erwarb 1971 einen Magister in Germanistik und Anglistik an der FU Berlin und promovierte 1976 zu vergleichender Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik an der University of California, Irvine. Er erhielt Professuren für Englisch an der University of Florida (1978–1991), der Universität Wien (1991–1997), der University of Botswana (1997–1999), der United Arab Emirates University (1999–2001), der Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2001–2002; als visiting professor), der (2005–2006) und der Universität Primorska (2006–2007). Zwischen 1979 und 1999 nahm er außerdem zahlreiche Gastprofessuren an. Beaugrande war in der Lage, in sechs Sprachen Vorlesungen zu halten und war bekannt für sein soziales Engagement. Seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten veröffentlichte er im Volltext zum freien Download auf seiner Website (siehe Weblinks). In seiner Arbeit widmete er sich verschiedenen Disziplinen der allgemeinen und angewandten Linguistik (Text-, Korpuslinguistik, Diskursanalyse, Grammatiktheorie, Psycholinguistik, Semiotik u. a.), der Literaturwissenschaft und Psychologie. Beaugrande fue uno de los fundadores de la Escuela de Viena de Lingüística Textual (Departamento de Lingüística de la Universidad de Viena, en 1981 publicó el manual Introducción a la lingüística del texto en colaboración con Wolfgang U. Dressler). Desempeñó un papel fundamental en la consolidación del análisis crítico del discurso. Cursó estudios de posgrado en filología alemana e inglesa en la Universidad Libre de Berlín, en 1971. En 1976, se doctoró en literatura comparada y lingüística en la Universidad de California, Irvine. Desde 1978 a 1991, ejerció como profesor titular de inglés en la Universidad de Florida. Desde 1991 hasta 1997 impartió clases de lingüística inglesa en la Universidad de Viena. Además, también fue profesor titular de inglés en la Universidad de Botsuana, en Gaborone y profesor titular de inglés y lingüística inglesa en la Universidad de la Florida en Gainesville. He was one of the developers of the Vienna School of Textlinguistik (Department of Linguistics at the University of Vienna), and published the seminal Introduction to Text Linguistics in 1981, with Wolfgang U. Dressler. He was also a major figure in the consolidation of critical discourse analysis. De Beaugrande had an MA in German and English Language and Literature by the Free University of Berlin, in 1971, and a PhD in Comparative Literature and Linguistics by the University of California, Irvine, in 1976. He served as professor of English in the University of Florida from 1978 to 1991, of English Linguistics at the University of Vienna from 1991 to 1997, Professor of English Language at the University of Botswana in Gaborone, Professor of English and English Linguistics at the University of Florida at Gainesville, and later as visiting professor in several universities in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
