- La Unió Europea va crear el Comitè de les Regions per representar les regions de la Unió Europa, entenen regions com el nivell administratiu que queda per sota d'un estat. El Comitè té la seu a Brussel·les. Les raons donades per això inclouen:
* Les reclamacions històriques i culturals d'autonomia de diverses regions.
* L'enfortiment de la situació política i econòmica en les regions. El terme "regió" tal com s'utilitza aquí incloïa, quan el Regne Unit formava part de la Unió Europea, Gal·les i Escòcia, que no són països sobirans, sinó nacions constitutives reconegudes pel Govern del Regne Unit i no es refereixen als dos territoris com "regions". - Europa der Regionen ist die Bezeichnung für ein politisches Konzept, das die Regionen innerhalb Europas unabhängig von den EU-Mitgliedstaaten fördern und in ihrer regionalen Eigenständigkeit unterstützen soll. Unter „Regionen“ versteht man in diesem Zusammenhang politische (meist subnationale) Gebiete, deren Bevölkerung ethnische, sprachliche, kulturelle oder auch religiöse Gemeinsamkeiten haben. Dies können Provinzen und Gliedstaaten (wie die deutschen Bundesländer), autonome Gebietskörperschaften (wie das Baskenland oder Katalonien in Spanien) oder aber auch grenzüberschreitende Gebiete (wie die Europaregion Tirol–Südtirol–Trentino) sein. Gerade letzteres Beispiel verdeutlicht, dass kulturell gewachsene Regionen dabei nicht zwangsläufig deckungsgleich mit den bestehenden Grenzen sein müssen. Das Konzept steht (im Gegensatz zum nationalistischen „Europa der Vaterländer“) nicht unbedingt für eine europaskeptische Haltung, wohl aber meist für eine starke Betonung des Subsidiaritätsprinzips. Häufig definiert es sich gerade auch in der Ablehnung starker (zentralistischer) Nationalstaaten – unterscheidet sich jedoch in den daraus folgenden Forderungen: Entweder einer Stärkung föderaler europäischer (→ Europäischer Föderalismus) oder regionaler Strukturen (→ Regionalismus); teilweise auch beides gleichzeitig. * strengthening the political and economic situation in those regions Some nation states which have historically had a strong centralized administration have transferred political power to the regions. Examples of this include the current negotiations in France concerning increased autonomy for Corsica. Some other states have traditionally had strong regions, such as the Federal Republic of Germany or the autonomous communities of Spain; yet others have been structured on the basis of national and municipal government with little in between. During the United Kingdom's membership of the EU, the term 'region' also included England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which are formally referred to as countries by the British government.
