- Die Red Shirts oder auch Redshirts (engl. für „Rothemden“) oder auch Rough Riders war eine paramilitärische Gruppe weißer Südstaatler, welche in der Reconstruction-Zeit nach dem Sezessionskrieg aktiv war. Die Organisation entstand 1875 in Mississippi, als Miliz-Einheiten der Demokratischen Partei anfingen, rote Hemden zu tragen, um die Mitglieder der Republikanischen Partei einzuschüchtern. Zu den bekanntesten Red Shirts gehörten die Unterstützer von Wade Hampton III. bei den Gouverneurswahlen in South Carolina 1876 und 1878. Die Red Shirts waren eine von mehreren Paramilitärs – wie beispielsweise die White League in Louisiana – welche aus den Bestrebungen weißer Demokraten entstanden, in den 1870ern die politische Macht im Süden zurückzuerlangen. Diese Organisationen wurden auch als der „bewaffnete Arm der Demokratischen Partei“ bezeichnet. Die Organisation war zeitweise in terroristische Aktivitäten verwickelt. Im Gegensatz zum Ku-Klux-Klan operierten White League, Red Shirts und ähnliche Gruppen allerdings offen und waren besser organisiert. Sie einte ein Ziel: Die Wiederherstellung der Herrschaft der Demokratischen Partei im Süden durch die Unterdrückung der Republikanischen Partei. Dies geschah für gewöhnlich durch die Unterdrückung der Bürgerrechte und Wahlteilnahme der befreiten Sklaven. Los Camisas rojas se originaron en Misisipi en 1875, cuando algunas brigadas conservadoras adoptaron camisas rojas para hacerse más visibles y amenazar tanto a sureños progresistas así como a los recién liberados. Grupos con modus operandi similar surgieron en Las Carolinas. Entre los Camisas Rojas más prominentes se encuentran los seguidores del candidato de Partido Democrático Wade Hampton durante las campañas electorales de 1876 y 1878. Las Camisas Rojas eran varias organizaciones paramilitares creadas después de la Guerra civil estadounidense, como la Liga Blanca en Luisiana, con el objetivo de "recuperar el poder político del sur". Estos grupos actuaron como "el brazo militar del Partido Demócrata." Ocasionalmente las Camisas Rojas participaban en actos violentos de terrorismo junto a la Liga Blanca y distintos clubs de tiro, y algunos grupos similares en los últimos años del siglo XIX trabajaron de manera más organizada que el Ku Klux Klan. - The Red Shirts or Redshirts of the Southern United States were white supremacist paramilitary terrorist groups that were active in the late 19th century in the last years of, and after the end of, the Reconstruction era of the United States. Red Shirt groups originated in Mississippi in 1875, when anti-Reconstruction private terror units adopted red shirts to make themselves more visible and threatening to Southern Republicans, both whites and freedmen. Similar groups in the Carolinas also adopted red shirts. Among the most prominent Red Shirts were the supporters of Democratic Party candidate Wade Hampton during the campaigns for the South Carolina gubernatorial elections of 1876 and 1878. The Red Shirts were one of several paramilitary organizations, such as the White League in Louisiana, arising from the continuing efforts of white Democrats to regain political power in the South in the 1870s. These groups acted as "the military arm of the Democratic Party." While sometimes engaging in violent acts of terrorism, the Red Shirts, the White League, rifle clubs, and similar groups in the late nineteenth century worked openly and were better organized than the underground terrorist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. They used organization, intimidation and force to achieve political purposes of restoring the Democrats to power, overturning Republicans, and repressing civil and voting rights of freedmen. During the 1876, 1898 and 1900 campaigns in North Carolina, the Red Shirts played prominent roles in intimidating non-Democratic Party voters. (en)
