- El bombardeo de Málaga de 1656 tuvo lugar el 21 de julio por parte de cinco fragatas inglesas en el marco de la Guerra anglo-española (1655-1660). Las fragatas inglesas aparecieron a las seis de la mañana en la bahía de Málaga sin que el Marqués de Mondéjar, gobernador de la plaza, diera la alarma. A la una de la tarde las fragatas se aproximaron al puerto y atacaron una galera genovesa y otra sicilina que intentaron huir al percatarse de la presencia de los ingleses. La galera siciliana logró escapar tras perder a dos hombres y resultar su capitán herido. La genovesa fue alcanzada sin poder salir del puerto y ardió junto con las demás embarcaciones que allí se encontraban. Acto seguido, las fragatas comenzaron a cañonear a Málaga y sus baluartes durante cuatro horas, dañando gravemente a la catedral. Al notar escasa resistencia, los ingleses desembarcaron y consiguieron tirar al mar gran parte de las municiones de que disponía la ciudad. Hubo al menos 14 muertos y muchos heridos. - The Raid on Malaga was a military action by the English against the Spanish city of Málaga on July 21, 1656 as part of the Anglo–Spanish War (1654–1660). Five English ships, HMS Henry, HMS Ruby, HMS Antelope, and HMS Bryan, appeared at six in the morning in the Bay of Málaga. The Marquis of Mondéjar, governor of the city, raised the alarm. At 13:00 the English frigates approached the harbor and attacked a Genoese and a Sicilian galley. The Sicilian galley succeeded in escaping at the cost of two killed and the captain being wounded. The Genoese galley was less lucky: it was seized and set on fire, together with all other ships found in the harbor. After this, the English started shelling the city and its defenses for four hours, seriously damaging Málaga Cathedral. Meeting little resistance, the English went ashore and destroyed the greater part of the city's munition supply. All the harbor guns were spiked as well. There were at least fourteen killed and many wounded in the city. A large part of the population fled to the countryside. (en)
