- Das Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), ist eine öffentliche Forschungsuniversität in Melbourne im australischen Bundesstaat Victoria. Sie wird von Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) als Fünf-Sterne-Hochschule eingestuft und steht in den QS World University Rankings 2023 auf Platz 190 in der Welt. Das RMIT unterliegt der königlichen Schirmherrschaft von Queen Elisabeth II und ist die einzige Hochschuleinrichtung Australiens, die das Recht hat, die Vorsilbe "Royal" zu tragen. Das RMIT wurde 1887 von Francis Ormond gegründet und begann als Reaktion auf die industrielle Revolution in Australien als Abendschule, die Kurse in Wissenschaft, Technologie und Kunst anbot. Founded in 1887 by Francis Ormond, RMIT began as a night school offering classes in art, science, and technology, in response to the industrial revolution in Australia. It was a private college for more than a hundred years before merging with the Phillip Institute of Technology to become a public university in 1992. It has an enrolment of around 95,000 higher and vocational education students, making it the largest dual-sector education institution in Australia. With an annual revenue of around A$1.5 billion, it is also one of the wealthiest universities in Australia. It is rated a five star university by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and is ranked 15th in the World for art and design subjects in the QS World University Rankings, making it the top art and design university in Australia and Oceania. W 1954 jako pierwsza i jak dotąd jedyna australijska uczelnia wyższa, instytut (wówczas znany jako Melbourne Technical College) otrzymał oficjalny patronat królewski i tym samym prawo używania w swej nazwie przymiotnika royal. Przez większość swojej historii Instytut był finansowany ze środków prywatnych. Dopiero w 1992 władze stanu Wiktoria przyznały mu status uniwersytetu publicznego, co oznaczało przejęcie przez nie głównego ciężaru jego finansowania. Wtedy też zaczęto stosować nazwę RMIT University. W sensie ścisłym odnosi się ona tylko do prowadzonych na RMIT studiów wyższych. Równolegle, podobnie jak wiele innych australijskich uczelni stanowych, prowadzi ona kształcenie typu policealnego pod marką RMIT TAFE. Uczelnia kształci ok. 50 tysięcy osób, w tym ok. 33,5 tysiąca słuchaczy studiów licencjackich oraz ok. 10,5 tysiąca magistrantów i doktorantów (pozostała część słuchaczy uczy się w trybie policealnym).
