Diese Algen und ihre Verwandten aus der Gattung sind innerhalb der Algen dahingehend besonders, da sie auch in Organismen Infektionen auslösen können, die keine Störung des Immunsystems aufweisen. Die beiden häufigsten Arten sind Prototheca wickerhamii und Prototheca zopfii. Beim Menschen wird die 1964 erstmals beschriebene Erkrankung meistens durch P. wickerhamii ausgelöst. Für Hunde sind beide Arten krankheitserregend. Die Algen kommen weltweit im Abwasser und in Böden vor; Infektionen sind aber trotz des relativ hohen Infektionsdrucks selten und können mit Defekten im Immunsystem zusammenhängen. Die Therapie ist nicht standardisiert, in der Literatur sind verschiedene Verfahrensweisen mit Antimykotika, chirurgischem Ausschneiden und Desinfektion beschrieben. (de)
