According to the 2005 taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi these snails belong to the "limacoid clade", and Vitreinae is a synonym for Pristilomatidae, although Vitreinae used to be a subfamily of Zonitidae. Family Pristilomatidae has no subfamilies (according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). (en)

Rodzina ta obejmuje ponad 120 gatunków, z których większość występuje w Holarktyce, a pozostałe w Ameryce Środkowej i na wyspach Polinezji. Z terenu Polski znanych jest 5 gatunków. Charakteryzują się przezroczystą, szklistą i bezbarwną muszlą o średnicy 1–6 mm. Jej skręty są liczne i ciasno nawinięte.
