- The Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) or Portsmouth handicap scheme is a term used for a number of related systems of empirical handicapping used primarily in small sailboat racing. The handicap is applied to the time taken to sail any course, and the handicaps can be used with widely differing types of sailboats. Portsmouth Numbers are updated with data from race results, normally annually. The various schemes are not directly linked, and ratings for the same class can and often do vary in the different schemes. The most prominent Portsmouth Yardstick systems are probably those administered in the United States by the Portsmouth Numbers Committee, in the United Kingdom by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and in Australia by . - De Portsmouth yardstick (PY) of Portsmouth handicapsysteem is een term gebruikt voor een aantal gerelateerde systemen voor het min of meer vergelijken van verschillende zeilboten. Dit vergelijken van zeilboten komt van pas bij zeilwedstrijden waar verschillende zeilklassen in één wedstrijd tegen elkaar strijden en men niet automatisch de snelste boot wil laten winnen, maar dat het meer aankomt op de kennis en kunde van de opvarenden. De verschillende systemen zijn niet direct aan elkaar gerelateerd. Dit kan als resultaat hebben dat verschillende systemen, voor dezelfde zeilklasse, verschillende waarden hebben. - I Numeri di Portsmouth (Portsmouth yardstick nella notazione in lingua inglese) costituiscono uno dei metodi, nell'ambito dello sport velico, che permettono di effettuare regate con barche a vela di diverse caratteristiche introducendo dei compensi che tengono conto delle diverse caratteristiche delle imbarcazioni (ad esempio delle differenze nella stazza): il tempo reale di regata di ciascuna imbarcazione, espresso in secondi, viene diviso per il compenso e moltiplicato per 1000 costituendo così il tempo compensato. La classifica della regata viene poi stilata in base al tempo compensato così calcolato. Tra le regate che utilizzano questo sistema a compensi, la Fuxia Race, il Trofeo , il Campionato del Verbano Italo-Svizzero Derive, il Circuito Italiano Long Distance, oltre ad una serie di manifestazioni di circolo dove non si riuscirebbe a formare classi per l'esiguità della flotta.
