He also served in the government of Kerala as Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives from 1996 to 1998. Vijayan won a seat in the May 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election as the CPI(M) candidate for Dharmadom constituency and was selected as the leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and became the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. He is the first chief minister from Kerala to be re-elected after completing a full term (five years) in office. (en)

Sekretarz stanowych struktur KPI (M) w Kerali (1998-2015), członek sekretariatu stanowego partii (od 1989). Włączony do Komitetu Centralnego oraz do Biura Politycznego. Poseł do różnych kadencji, w okresie od 1970 (ostatnia reelekcja w 2021). Minister energii i spraw spółdzielczych Kerali (1996-1998), od 2016 premier Kerali. Należy do umiarkowanego skrzydła KPI (M), od wielu lat skonfliktowany jest ze swoim dawnym mentorem V.S. Achuthanandanem. Uznawany za sprawnego administratora, ceniony za swoją rolę w odbudowie stanu po powodziach z 2018 i 2019. Działania jego gabinetu w zakresie zarządzania kryzysem spowodowanym pandemią COVID-19 przyciągnęły uwagę obserwatorów tak w Indiach, jak i poza granicami kraju. Jego zawoalowaną krytykę można odnaleźć w filmie wyreżyserowanym przez w 2013. Wyróżniony nagrodą dla najlepszego indyjskiego premiera stanowego przez Gandhi Global Foundation (2018).
