- Peveril du Pic (en anglais, Peveril of the Peak) est un roman historique de l'auteur écossais Walter Scott, paru le 7 janvier 1823 sous la signature « par l'auteur de Waverley, Kenilworth, etc. » Le récit a pour cadre l'Angleterre et l'île de Man au XVIIe siècle. C'est le plus long des romans de Scott. Il évoque brièvement les trois guerres civiles ayant opposé les « Cavaliers » aux « Têtes rondes » de 1642 à 1651, puis la Restauration en 1660. Il concentre l'action principale sur l'année 1679, au plus fort du prétendu « complot papiste », rumeur générant des persécutions contre les catholiques. L'amitié improbable entre le Cavalier sir Geoffrey et le Tête ronde Bridgenorth se renforce pendant la guerre civile. La haine s'installe entre eux à la Restauration. Le personnage central, le jeune Julian Peveril, incarne le bon sens et le juste milieu. Il aime son père, sir Geoffrey. Il aime celui qu'il voudrait pour beau-père, Bridgenorth. Mais il ne souscrit pas aux dérèglements d'esprit des deux hommes : son père est méprisant, aveuglé par les préjugés ; Bridgenorth finit par tomber dans le fanatisme religieux. C'est l'affrontement de ces deux formes d'intolérance qui a provoqué en Angleterre neuf années de massacres. (fr)
