- Paul A. Offit (* 27. März 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland) ist ein US-amerikanischer Mediziner (Pädiatrie) und Impfstoffentwickler. Offit studierte Medizin an der Tufts University mit dem Bachelor-Abschluss und an der University of Maryland, an der er promoviert wurde (M.D.). Dabei war er auch ein Schüler am Children's Hospital von Philadelphia des Impfstoffentwicklers Maurice Hilleman. Er ist Maurice R. Hilleman Professor für Impfstoffkunde und Professor für Pädiatrie an der Perelman School of Medicine der University of Pennsylvania und leitet dort die Abteilung Infektionskrankheiten. Er leitet das Vaccine Education Center des Children's Hospital of Philadelphia und war Mitglied des Beratungskommittees für Impffragen des Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Offit entwickelte in jahrzehntelanger Arbeit einen Impfstoff (RotaTeq, in den USA 2006 zugelassen und produziert von Merck & Co.) gegen den Rotavirus (mit H. Fred Clark und Stanley Plotkin). Die Krankheit ist für jährlich hunderttausende Todesfälle infolge von Durchfällen bei Kindern besonders in der Dritten Welt verantwortlich. In den USA ist er auch bekannt als öffentlicher Gegner der Versprechungen der alternativen Medizin und von Impfgegnern in den USA, die die wissenschaftlich widerlegte Ansicht verbreiteten, es würde ein Zusammenhang zwischen Impfungen und Autismus bestehen (darüber veröffentlichte er 2008 ein Buch). 2005 wurde er Mitglied des Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Offit is the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology, professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, former chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases (1992–2014), and the director of the Vaccine Education Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been a member of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Offit is a board member of Every Child By Two and a Founding Board Member of the Autism Science Foundation (ASF). Offit has published more than 130 papers in medical and scientific journals in the areas of rotavirus-specific immune responses and vaccine safety, and is the author or co-author of books on vaccines, vaccination, the rejection of medicine by some religious groups, and antibiotics. He is one of the most public faces of the scientific consensus that vaccines have no association with autism. As a result, he has been the frequent target of hate mail and death threats. (en)
