- The Park Avenue Tunnel, also called the Murray Hill Tunnel, is a 1,600-foot-long (488 m) tunnel that passes under seven blocks of Park Avenue in Murray Hill, in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Traffic currently goes northbound from 33rd Street toward the Park Avenue Viaduct. The tunnel is under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Transportation, and carries one lane of northbound car traffic from East 33rd Street to East 40th Street; from 40th Street north, traffic must follow the Park Avenue Viaduct around Grand Central Terminal to 46th Street. The vertical clearance is 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m). The IRT Lexington Avenue Line of the New York City Subway, carrying the 4, 5, 6, and <6> trains, runs parallel to the Park Avenue Tunnel in two tunnels below it. (en)

De 488 m lange enkelrichtingstunnel met een enkele rijstrook loopt van zuid naar noord onder Park Avenue over een afstand van zeven blokken, van East 33rd Street naar East 40th Street in Manhattan en komt terug bovengronds net ten zuiden van station Grand Central Terminal. Ooit liep er de New York en Harlem Railroad doorheen en later de tram van hetzelfde bedrijf; tegenwoordig is het een verkeerstunnel voor voertuigen met een maximale hoogte van 2,72 meter. Vanwege de bouw van het Grand Central Terminal en het verwijderen van de rails, is de noordkant van de tunnel opnieuw aangelegd, alleen een stuk steiler. De tunnel was van oudsher gebouwd als een open verlaging in de oppervlakte. In 1834 was de tunnel voltooid. In de jaren 1850 kreeg de tunnel een dak, gemaakt van granieten bielsen van de originele spoorweg bij Yorkville (85th Street). (nl)
