- General elections were held in Pakistan on Saturday 11 May 2013 to elect the members of the 14th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan People's Party led by incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan. The PML-N won a majority in the National Assembly and formed a government. At the provincial level, the PML-N remained the largest party in Punjab; the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) retained its dominance in Sindh. Prior to the elections, the ruling PPP formed an alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and Awami National Party, while the main opposition party, the PML-N allied with the Pakistan Muslim League (F) and Baloch parties. The PTI led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, also emerged as a key-player. The result was a hung parliament, with the PML-N receiving the most votes and winning the most seats, but falling six seats short of a majority. However, following the elections, 19 independent MPs joined the PML-N, allowing it to form a government alone with Nawaz Sharif as new Prime Minister. In the provincial elections, the PPP was able to defend its majority in Sindh. The PTI won the most seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the first time it had gained control of a province. The PML-N emerged as the largest party in Punjab and Balochistan. The elections were the first civilian transfer of power following the successful completion of a five-year term by a democratically elected government. (en)
- Les élections législatives pakistanaises de 2013 se sont déroulées le 11 mai 2013 afin de renouveler les élus de l'Assemblée nationale et des quatre assemblées provinciales du Pakistan après la fin de leur mandat de cinq ans reçus lors des élections législatives de 2008. Elles conduisent à la victoire de la principale force d'opposition, la Ligue musulmane du Pakistan (N) et au retour de Nawaz Sharif au poste de Premier ministre. À la suite des précédentes élections, le Parti du peuple pakistanais avait remporté le scrutin et formé une coalition gouvernementale pour obtenir une majorité relativement stable. Son mandat coïncide avec une recrudescence des combats entre les insurgés islamistes et l'armée ainsi qu'une multiplication des attentats à la bombe. Le quinquennat est également marqué par la démise du Premier ministre Gilani par la Cour suprême en 2012 et des tensions avec le pouvoir militaire lors de l'affaire du mémorandum. Le gouvernement est surtout critiqué par la population pour son bilan économique et sécuritaire et est accusé de corruption tant par l'opposition que par la justice. Ces élections mènent au retour au pouvoir de l'ancien Premier ministre Nawaz Sharif et de la victoire de sa formation, pour la première fois depuis les élections de 1997, remportant une majorité absolue à l'Assemblée nationale et arrivant en tête dans deux des quatre provinces. Mamnoon Hussain est ensuite élu président de la République en septembre 2013. Le scrutin signe aussi l'émergence du Mouvement du Pakistan pour la justice d'Imran Khan qui arrive deuxième dans les urnes mais va contester la régularité du scrutin. (fr)
