- Orest Mykhailovych Somov (en ukrainien : Орест Сомов, en russe : О́рест Миха́йлович Со́мов ; Vovtchansk, 11 décembre 1793 - Saint-Pétersbourg, 27 mai 1833) est un poète, traducteur, critique, éditeur et écrivain romantique ukrainien. Il étudie à l'Université de Kharkiv, où il devient adepte de la littérature romantique et de la fiction gothique. En 1817, il s'installe à Saint-Pétersbourg, où il poursuit sa carrière littéraire. En plus de sa carrière d'écrivain et de traducteur, il s'est imposé comme critique et éditeur, devenant l'un des premiers hommes de lettres professionnels de l'Empire russe. Somov s'est énormément inspiré du folklore de son Ukraine natale et la plupart de ses écrits y font référence. De son vivant, Somov était un écrivain populaire. Ses œuvres ont eu un grand impact sur le monde littéraire des années 1820. Ses œuvres étaient très populaires et les critiques favorables. Après sa mort, son nom et ses œuvres tombent dans l'oubli. Ce n'est qu'en 1989 que Yuriy Vynnychuk a remis Somov sur le devant de la littéraire ukrainienne. L'acteur américain René Auberjonois fait partie de sa famille éloignée ; La mère du grand-père maternel d'Auberjonois était une noble russe, Eudoxia Michailovna Somova (1850–1924), une cousine collatérale de Somov. - Orest Mikhailovich Somov (Russian and Ukrainian: Орест Михайлович Сомов) (21 December [O.S. 10 December] 1793 – 8 June [O.S. 27 May] 1833) was a Russian romantic writer of Ukrainian origin. He studied at Kharkiv University, where he became an admirer of Romantic literature and Gothic fiction. In 1817 he moved to Saint Petersburg where he continued his literary career. In addition to being a writer and translator, he established himself as a critic, editor and publisher, thus becoming one of the first professional men of letters in the Russian Empire. Somov was drawn to the folklore of his native Ukraine and much of his writing refers to Ukrainian history and folklore. Somov was a popular writer during his lifetime. His works on Ukrainian themes made a big impact on the literary canon of the 1820s. His literary works were widely read and his critical opinion was highly regarded. However, after Somov's death, his name and works were consigned to oblivion. Only in 1989 Yuriy Vynnychuk put Somov back on the Ukrainian literary radar collection of Somov’s folktales. He is distantly related to the American actor René Auberjonois; Auberjonois' maternal grandfather's mother was a Russian noblewoman, Eudoxia Michailovna Somova (1850–1924), a collateral cousin of Somov's.
