- The existing Hong Kong honours system was created after transfer of government of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China as a special administrative region in 1997. Before that, Hong Kong was a British dependent territory and followed the British honours system. The Hong Kong SAR government releases an annual Honours List, which is published in the Government Gazette on Establishment Day (1 July). (en)

De protocollaire volgorde werd door de Chinese autoriteiten vastgelegd. De afkorting "JP" betekent "Justice of the Peace" of "Vrederechter". Deze magistraatsfunctie is meestal honorair. Men draagt de titel zolang men ambtenaar is, anderen dragen haar voor het leven.Deze vrederechters spreken geen recht, zij adviseren de regering en inspecteren gevangenissen. (nl)
