- La iniciativa Agricultura Abierta (OpenAg) es un proyecto en desarrollo del MIT Media Lab del Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts y fundado en 2015 por Caleb Harper. Los objetivos del proyecto buscan desarrollar plataformas de agricultura con entornos controlados, estas plataformas tienen el nombre de Food Computers (‘computadoras de alimentos’ u ‘ordenadores de alimentos’), que pueden operar en una variedad de tamaños los cuales van desde el uso experimental, educacional o personal hasta la producción de lo que el OpenAg llama Food Datacenter (‘Centro de datos de alimentos’). Todo el hardware, software y datos será de código abierto con la intención de crear una plataforma abierta de investigación y experimentación agrícola. OpenAg defiende y busca una transparencia en la industria agrícola, promueve además que sea sostenible y además fomenta las prácticas agrícolas locales a través de una agricultura urbana que podría mejorar el acceso a comidas más frescas y sanas para los habitantes de las ciudades. - The MIT Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAg) was founded in 2015 by Caleb Harper as an initiative of the MIT Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The project closed in April 2020 with the departure of Harper from MIT, although the closure was only officially confirmed by MIT a month later in May. The project aimed to develop controlled-environment agriculture platforms called "Food Computers" that operated on a variety of scales, and which might have been used for experimental, educational, or personal use. All of the hardware, software, and data would have been open source, with the intention of creating a standardized open platform for agricultural research and experimentation. In theory, had the project succeeded, it would have enhanced transparency in the agricultural industry and made urban agriculture easier to perform, easing access to fresh foods. The OpenAg project received criticism that much of its early positive publicity was based on results that were either exaggerated or outright faked. Staff members told stories of purchasing potted plants from stores and demonstrating them as if they had been grown in "Food Computers". Gizmodo called the project a "Theranos for plants" and said that few, if any, of the Food Computers successfully grew a plant. The project was also buffeted by the resignation of Joichi Ito from the MIT Media Lab, who had helped procure much of the funding for the project. (en)
