- Die Ohio State Buckeyes (buckeye = englisch für „Rosskastanie“) sind eine Football-Mannschaft (College-Football-Team) der Ohio State University (OSU). Als Mitglied der National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) nehmen sie am Spielbetrieb in der East Division der Big Ten Conference teil. Sie spielen seit 1922 im Ohio Stadium in Columbus im US-Bundesstaat Ohio und haben bisher 8 nationale Meisterschaften und 40 Conference-Meisterschaften gewonnen. Zudem sind sie in zehn Saisons ungeschlagen geblieben. Football führten George Cole und Alexander S. Lilley 1890 an der Universität ein. Bis 1901 war das neue Footballteam selbstständig, bevor es als Gründungsmitglied in der Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) teilnahm. Als Mitglied in der OAC gewannen sie zwei Conference-Meisterschaften, bevor sie 1912 in die Big Ten Conference wechselten.1942 konnten sie unter Chefcoach Paul Brown ihre erste nationale Meisterschaft gewinnen.Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging es trotz dreier verschiedener Trainer in kurzer Zeit sportlich bergab, bis schließlich 1952 Woody Hayes engagiert wurde. Mit ihm als Head Coach gewann Ohio State 13 Big-Ten-Meisterschaften, fünf Nationale Meisterschaften (1954, 1957, 1961, 1968 und 1970) und 4 Rose-Bowl-Titel bei acht Teilnahmen. Nach der Entlassung Hayes’ 1987 führten Earle Bruce und später auch John Cooper die Mannschaft zu sieben weiteren Conference-Titeln. 2001 wurde Jim Tressel als Trainer eingestellt und konnte 2002 mit dem Sieg im Fiesta Bowl den siebten nationalen Meisterschaftstitel gewinnen. Mit Tressel wurden außerdem noch 7 Big Ten Championships und bei acht Teilnahmen fünf Spiele der Bowl Championship Series gewonnen. Am 28. November 2011 wurde Urban Meyer, welcher selbst aus Ohio stammt und mit den Florida Gators bereits zwei Meistertitel hatte erringen können, zum Head Coach ernannt. Er konnte mit 24 Siegen am Stück einen Schulrekord aufstellen und gewann mit den Buckeyes die nationale Meisterschaft 2014. Seit 2019 ist Head Coach der Buckeyes. Das Ohio-State-Footballprogramm kann eine Gesamtbilanz von 930 Siegen, 328 Niederlagen, 53 Unentschieden und 53 Bowl Games vorweisen. Zuletzt gewann man 2020 den Sugar Bowl und unterlag im College Football Playoff National Championship Game der Alabama Crimson Tide. (Stand: Ende der Saison 2020). (de)
- The Ohio State Buckeyes football team competes as part of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, representing Ohio State University in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State has played their home games at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio since 1922. The Buckeyes are recognized by the university and NCAA as having won eight national championships along with 41 conference championships (including 39 Big Ten titles), 10 division championships, 10 undefeated seasons, and six perfect seasons (no losses or ties). Seven players have received the (second all-time), with the program holding the distinction of having the only two-time winner of the award. The first Ohio State game was a 20–14 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, on May 3, 1890. The team was a football independent from 1890 to 1901 before joining the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) as a charter member in 1902. The Buckeyes won two conference championships while members of the OAC and in 1912 became members of the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State won their first national championship in 1942 under head coach Paul Brown. Following World War II, Ohio State saw sparse success on the football field with three separate coaches and in 1951 hired Woody Hayes to coach the team. Under Hayes, Ohio State won 205 games, five national championships (1954, 1957, 1961, 1968 and 1970). 13 Big Ten conference championships, and eight Rose Bowl appearances. Following Hayes' dismissal in 1978, Earle Bruce won 4 Big Ten titles (1979, 1981, 1984, 1986) and later John Cooper coached the team to 3 conference championships (1993, 1996, 1998). Jim Tressel was hired as head coach in 2001 and led Ohio State to its seventh national championship in 2002. Under Tressel, Ohio State won seven Big Ten championships and appeared in eight Bowl Championship Series (BCS) games, winning five of them. Urban Meyer became head coach in 2011. Under Meyer, the team went 12–0 in his first season and set a school record with 24 consecutive victories, won three Big Ten championships (2014, 2017, and 2018), and won the first College Football Playoff National Championship in 2014. As of 2017, the football program is valued at $1.5 - 2 billion, the highest valuation of any such program in the country and roughly comparable to the value of the Browns or Bengals. (en)
