NGC 1087 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in Cetus. The central bar/core is very small with many irregular features in the surrounding disk of material. With the many strange features of NGC 1087, its true nature is still uncertain. It has an extremely small nucleus and a very short stellar bar. Unlike most barred galaxies, the bar apparently has some new star-formation taking place. There is a multiple spiral structure defined more by the dust lanes than by luminous matter. Overall, the disc has a very low surface brightness. Even though it appears close to another galaxy (NGC 1090), these two galaxies are not interacting and should be considered isolated from one another.

Das Objekt ist ein enger Nachbar von Messier 77, physisch gehören sie derselben Galaxiengruppe an. Im selben Himmelsareal befinden sich u. a. die Galaxien NGC 1090, NGC 1094, NGC 1104, IC 1856. Die Typ-II-Supernova SN 1995V wurde hier beobachtet. Das Objekt wurde am 9. Oktober 1785 vom deutsch-britischen Astronomen Wilhelm Herschel entdeckt. (de)

El disco de material circundante, de muy baja luminosidad superficial, presenta rasgos irregulares. Aparece cerca de otra galaxia, , pero se piensa que ambas galaxias no están interactuando y deben considerarse separadamente. Aunque se encuentra cerca del Grupo de M77, parece que no forma parte del mismo. Fue descubierta el 9 de octubre de 1785 por William Herschel. (es)

Based on the published red shift, (Hubble Constant of 62 km/s per Mpc) a rough distance estimate for NGC 1087 is 80 million light-years, with a diameter of about 86,800 light-years. The type II supernova SN 1995V is the only recorded supernova in NGC 1087. (en)

À ce jour, une vingtaine de mesures non basées sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) donnent une distance de 14,265 ± 3,194 Mpc (∼46,5 millions d'a.l.), ce qui est tout juste à l'extérieur des valeurs de la distance de Hubble.
