Selon le recensement de 2011, la population de Myrtiá compte 560 habitants. Le village est situé à une altitude de 365 mètres et à une distance de 15 km de Héraklion. Au Xe siècle, il est appelé Varvári (en grec moderne : Βαρβάροι). En 1583, il est mentionné dans le recensement de Castrofilaca sous le nom de Varvarus, avec 36 familles. (fr)

It is situated at an altitude of 365 meters from the sea. It borders with the municipal unit of Episkopi and the municipality of Heraklion, and the villages Astrakoi and Agies Paraskies. It has a population of 560 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. The jewel of the village is the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum which was founded by designer George Anemogiannis (el) and the Centre of Cretan Literature, founded by the municipality in cooperation with the University of Crete and Cretan Philologists.
