- Windows 3.0 je v informatice označení pro grafické uživatelské rozhraní firmy Microsoft vydané 22. května 1990. Jedná se o 16bitovou nadstavbu operačního systému DOS. Windows se v této verzi staly na IBM PC prvním reálným soupeřem pro počítače Macintoshe od Applu a Amiga od firmy Commodore International. Nástupcem byla série verzí Windows 3.1x. (cs)

Sebelum adanya Sistem Operasi Microsoft Windows yang berbasis antarmuka grafis, sudah ada MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) yang dirilis pada tahun 1981. Sebenarnya MS-DOS dibuat oleh perusahaan Seattle Computer Products, tetapi kemudian lisensinya dibeli oleh Microsoft dengan harga 50.000 dolar. Kemudian dari MS-DOS inilah Microsoft Windows semakin berkembang dan mulai melahirkan versi versi terbaru. Versi pertama dari Microsoft Windows adalah Windows 1.0 yang dirilis pada tanggal 20 November 1985, masih tedapat banyak kekurangan dari versi ini, terutama dalam hal fungsionalitas karena Windows 1.0 hanya memperluas kemampuan pada MS-DOS dengan menambahkan antarmuka grafis, sehingga Microsoft Windows 1.0 masih memiliki masalah dan kelemahan yang sama dengan MS-DOS. Selanjutnya Windows versi 2 dirilis pada tanggal 9 Desember 1987, dan menjadi sedikit lebih populer dibandingkan dengan Windows 1.0 karena adanya aplikasi grafis buatan Microsoft yaitu Microsoft Excel for Windows dan Microsoft Word for Windows. Kemudian Microsoft merilis 2 Versi dari Windows yaitu Windows/286 2.1 dan Windows/386 2.1. Windows/286 2.1 menggunakan model memori modus real (x86) tetapi menggunakan versi yang pertama yang mendukung HMA (High Memory Area). Windows/386 2.1 memiliki kernel yang berjalan dalam modus terproteksi dengan emulasi Expanded Memory Specification (EMS). Akhirnya Microsoft Windows mencapai kesuksesan yang sangat signifikan ketika merilis Windows 3.0 pada tahun 1990, terjual 10 juta kopi dalam dua tahun sebelum peningkatan versi 3.1. Selain menawarkan peningkatan kemampuan terhadap aplikasi Windows, Windows 3.0 juga dapat menjalankan beberapa aplikasi MS-DOS dalam waktu yang bersamaan atau biasa kita sebut multitasking. Le lancement d'applications était ainsi grandement simplifié. MS-DOS restait l'interface principale, depuis laquelle on lançait Windows. Le panneau de configuration avait été refondu en imitant celui de Mac OS. Il contenait en un seul point les réglages du système ainsi qu'un panneau de commande simple régissant l'apparence de l'interface. Quelques applications étaient fournies telles le Bloc-notes ou le Write (prédécesseur de WordPad), déjà présentes sur les versions précédentes ainsi que la calculatrice et Paintbrush, l'ancêtre de Paint.
