- محمد أنس هيثم سويد ويُعرف أيضًا باسمِ أنس سويد أو أليكس سويد، هو مواطن سوري-أمريكي مُقيم في ليسبورغ بفرجينيا. اشتهرَ بعدما وجّهت لهُ الحكومة الفيدرالية للولايات المتحدة تُهمًا بالتجسس في تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2011. يبلغُ سويد من العمر 47 سنة وقد اتُهمَ بتسريب معلومات ومعطيات حول المتظاهرين السوريين الأمريكيين في الولايات المتحدة ضدّ حكومة الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد الذي يُعتقد أنّ نظامهُ قد اعتقل وعذب عائلات المعارضين الذين يعيشون في الخارج والذين بلّغَ عنهم محمد أنس. خلال مرحلة الانتفاضة المدنيّة؛ قمعت الحكومة السورية بشكلٍ عنيفٍ جدًا المظاهرات السلميّة التي طالبت بإسقاط نظام الأسد الذي حكمَ سوريا منذ عقود. أدّت ردود الفعل التي وُصفت بالهمجيّة إلى سخطٍ عارمٍ وسطَ الشباب والمعارضين الذين يعيشون في المنفى والذين توحدوا هذه المرة من أجلِ مواجهة بشار ونظامه. حسب تحقيق لصحيفة نيويورك تايمز فقد عملَ أنس على جمعِ أكبر عددٍ من المعلومات حولَ المعارضين في الخارج والذين تلقوا بشكلٍ شبه منتظم للمضايقات والتهديدات والترهيب وذلكَ من قبل أشخاص يعتقد على نطاقٍ واسعٍ أنهم وكلاء الحكومة السورية. بحلول الثالث من تشرين الأول/أكتوبر من نفسِ العام؛ أكّدت منظمة العفو الدولية في تقريرٍ لها «أنّها رصدت تعرّضَ المتظاهرين خارج سوريا لمضايقات من قبل السفارة السورية تارة ومن قِبل مسؤولين تابعين للنظام تارة أخرى.» (ar)
- Mohamad Anas Haitham Soueid (also known as Alex Soueid and Anas Alswaid) is a Syrian-born naturalized United States citizen and a resident of Leesburg, Virginia who was indicted on espionage-related charges by federal prosecutors in October 2011. Soueid, 47 years old, is accused of passing information about Syrian American protesters in the United States to the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who are thought to have arrested and tortured numerous Syrian political refugees' family members and associates living in Syria. The arrest and indictment occurred during the 2011 Syrian uprising, in which the Syrian government has allegedly violently reacted to demonstrations against the government and in some instances has harassed Syrian exiles living abroad. According to the New York Times, "the details laid out by the Justice Department lent greater support to claims by Syrian activists living abroad that they face systematic harassment, threats and intimidation – including being videotaped at protests supportive of the country’s antigovernment uprising – by people they believe to be agents of the Syrian government." An October 3 Amnesty International report stated that "protesters outside Syria have been systematically monitored and harassed by Syrian embassy officials and others believed to be acting on behalf of the Syrian regime." Syrian dissident Ahed al-Hendi, who coordinated demonstrations in Washington, stated that "The mentality of the Syrian regime is to track all the dissidents and know what they're doing." (en)
