- ترصّد المرض هو ممارسة وبائية يُراقَب فيها انتشار المرض من أجل تحديد أنماط التقدم. الدور الرئيسي لترصد المرض هو التنبؤ ورصد والتقليل من الضرر الناتج عن الأوبئة، والجائحات، والتفشيات، بالإضافة إلى زيادة المعرفة المتعلقة بمساهمة عوامل الخطر في إحداث هذه الظروف. جزء مهم من ترصد المرض الحديث هو ممارسة الإبلاغ عن الحالة المرضيّة. في العصور الحديثة، تحوّل الإبلاغ عن معدل حدوث تفشيات الأمراض من التسجيل اليدوي إلى الاتصال العالمي الفوري عبر الإنترنت. قد يُجمَع عدد الحالات من المشافي التي يُتوقَّع أنها تستقبل أكثر حالات الحدوث، ثم يُقارَن ويُفحَص، وفي النهاية يُنشَر. مع تقدم تقنية التواصل الحديثة، تغير ذلك بشكل كبير. في الوقت الحالي، يمكن أن تبلغ منظمات مثل منظمة الصحة العالمية ومراكز مكافحة الأمراض واتقائها عن الحالات والوفيات الناجمة عن أمراض خطيرة خلال أيام أحيانًا خلال ساعات من حدوثها. علاوة على ذلك، هناك ضغط عام كبير لجعل هذه المعلومات متاحة بسرعة وبدقة. - Disease surveillance is an epidemiological practice by which the spread of disease is monitored in order to establish patterns of progression. The main role of disease surveillance is to predict, observe, and minimize the harm caused by outbreak, epidemic, and pandemic situations, as well as increase knowledge about which factors contribute to such circumstances. A key part of modern disease surveillance is the practice of disease case reporting. In modern times, reporting incidences of disease outbreaks has been transformed from manual record keeping, to instant worldwide internet communication. The number of cases could be gathered from hospitals – which would be expected to see most of the occurrences – collated, and eventually made public. With the advent of modern communication technology, this has changed dramatically. Organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now can report cases and deaths from significant diseases within days – sometimes within hours – of the occurrence. Further, there is considerable public pressure to make this information available quickly and accurately. (en)

Elle nécessite de coordonner des aspects « médicaux, technologiques, humains et organisationnels » et parfois des contraintes spécifiques (propres par exemple au contexte scolaire, militaire, carcéral, industriel et professionnel ou à des populations particulières, migrants, touristes…).
