Este pueblo se ubica al noreste del estado de Oaxaca, aunque un número de ellos están repartidos en todo el país. El 1.8% de la población indígena de México pertenece al pueblo mixe. El área que ocupa la integran 19 municipios, además de algunas agencias municipales en otros 5 municipios. Muchas de las comunidades se ubican en la región conocida como Sierra Mixe y otras más se hallan en el Istmo de Tehuantepec. Son reconocidos por la legislación estatal como parte integrante y que sustenta al estado. Los mixes hablan la lengua mixe, un idioma de la familia lingüística mixe-zoque, cuyas lenguas se hablan alrededor del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Los pueblos más cercanamente emparentados son los mixe-popolucas, los zoque-popolucas y los zoques, que viven en los estados de Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca y Chiapas. (es)
