  • Men's sheds or community sheds are non-profit local organisations that provide a space for craftwork and social interaction. The movement originated in Australia around the 1980s as a way to improve the health and wellbeing of older men. However some have expanded their remit to anyone regardless of age or gender, and have similar aims and functions to hackerspaces. There are over 900 located across Australia, with thousands of active members. Men's sheds can also be found in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, United States, Canada, Finland, New Zealand and Greece. The slogan for men's sheds is "Shoulder To Shoulder", shortened from "Men don't talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder", adopted after the 2008 Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) conference. The users of men's sheds are known as "shedders". In 2014, Professor Barry Golding coined the term "shedagogy" to describe "a distinctive, new way of acknowledging, describing and addressing the way some men prefer to learn informally in shed-like spaces mainly with other men." Sheds as a venue for mentoring other men and Inter-generational mentoring is a growing outcome. Academics are using men's sheds as a research venue and research partner in exploring men's health and social needs. (en)
  • Is éard is bothán fear ann ná eagraíocht áitiúil neamhbhrabúis a sholáthraíonn spás le haghaidh ceardaíochta agus caidrimh shóisialta. Tháinig an ghluaiseacht chun cinn san Astráil sna 1980idí mar bhealach chun sláinte agus folláine na bhfear scothaosta a fheabhsú. Anois, cuireann roinnt de na botháin fáilte roimh aon duine, beag beann ar aois nó ar inscne. Tá níos mó 900 bothán fear ann san Astráil amháin, leis na mílte ball gníomhach. Tá go leor bothán fear i dtíortha eile chomh maith, mar shampla sa Ríocht Aontaithe, in Éirinn, sna Stáit Aontaithe, i gCeanada, san Fhionlainn, sa Nua-Shéalainn agus sa Ghréig. Is é “gualainn ar ghualainn” mana na n-eagraíochtaí, leagan giorraithe den fhrása “Ní labhraíonn fir aghaidh ar aghaidh, labhraíonn siad ghualainn le gualainn". Glacadh leis an mana seo tar éis chomhdháil bhliantúil Chumann Astrálach na mBothán Fear in 2008. Tugtar “bothánaithe” "(“shedders” i mBéarla) ar dhaoine a bhaineann úsáid as na botháin. Ceann de na torthaí is tábhachtaí atá ag teacht as gluaiseacht na mbothán ná an mheantóireacht idirghlúine a dhéantar iontu. Tá acadóirí ag baint úsáide as na botháin mar ionad taighde chun riachtanais sláinte agus shóisialta na bhfear a fhiosrú. (ga)
