Instrumen ini didesain untuk memantau perubahan pola polusi dan efeknya di atmosfer bumi bagian bawah. Instrumen ini didanai oleh Space Science Division dari Canadian Space Agency. MOPITT adalah pemantau yang mengarah ke titik yang mengukur radiasi inframerah pada 4,7 mikrometer dan 2,2 - 2,4 mikrometer.
