- The Mayor of Budapest (Hungarian: Budapest főpolgármestere) is the head of the General Assembly in Budapest, Hungary, elected directly for 5-year term since 2014 (previously municipal elections were held quadrennially). Until 1994 the mayor was elected by the General Assembly. The office was called Chairman of the Council of Budapest (Hungarian: Budapest tanácselnöke) between 1950 and 1990, during the Communist period. Since 1990, the position is domestically known as Lord Mayor (Hungarian: főpolgármester) to distinguish the office from that of the mayors that lead each of Budapest's 23 districts. Between 1873 and 1945, the Lord Mayor of Budapest was representative of the Hungarian government as head of the capital's municipal authority, similarly to the Lord-Lieutenants of Counties. (en)
- Le bourgmestre principal de Budapest (en hongrois Budapest főpolgármestere) désigne depuis 1990 le chef de la collectivité métropolitaine de Budapest, élu au suffrage universel indirect par les différents représentants des arrondissements de la capitale. Entre 1873 et 1945, le bourgmestre principal était le représentant du gouvernement devant la « municipalité » de la ville (törvényhatóság), soit l'équivalent au niveau de Budapest de l'ispan principal (főispán), qui représentait l'autorité centrale au niveau des assemblées comitales et des assemblées des villes de droit municipal de province. Il ne faut alors pas confondre cette fonction avec celle de bourgmestre de Budapest, désignant quant à elle le premier des membres de l'assemblée municipale. Entre 1950 et 1990, la fonction est supprimée et c'est le président du conseil de Budapest qui assume la première charge de la ville. Le bourgmestre principal équivaut au rang de Stadtpräsident dans les pays germaniques ou de primátor/primatar dans les pays slaves. (fr)
