Das Institut betreibt in erster Linie Grundlagenforschung im Fach der Naturwissenschaften auf dem Gebiet der Astronomie. Neben eigenen astronomischen Beobachtungen und astronomischer Forschung ist das Institut auch aktiv an der Entwicklung von Beobachtungsinstrumenten beteiligt.
