- Mathias Numsen Blytt ( 26 de abril de 1789 -26 de junio 1862 ) fue un botánico, y briólogo y padre del también botánico Axel G. Blytt (1843-1898) Primero estudia derecho,para más tarde especializarse en Botánica y llegar a ser profesor de la universidad de Christiana. Realiza importantes expediciones botánicas por el centro y sur de Europa. Su más importante obra, Norges Flora (La flora de Noruega), parte de la cual ya había sido publicada en 1861, queda incompleta a su deceso. Pero, la retoma su hijo, publicándola en los 1870s como Ensayo sobre la migración de la flora noruega durante los periodos alternantes lluviosos y secos. El Museo botánico de Cristiana fue fundado en 1863, gracias a su considerable herbario. Ser halla sepultado en el , de Oslo. (es)

Dapprima dedicatosi agli studi di legge, in seguito si specializza in botanica e diventa un professore presso l'Università di Christiana. Compie importanti spedizioni botaniche attraverso il centro ed il sud Europa. La sua opera più importante, Norges Flora (Flora della Norvegia), parte della quale era stata pubblicata nel 1861, resta incompleta alla sua morte. Verrà successivamente ripresa dal figlio, che pubblicherà nel 1870 come Saggio sulla migrazione della flora norvegesi durante alternati periodi di pioggia e d'asciutto. Il Museo botanico della città di Christiania è stato fondato nel 1863, grazie al suo notevole erbario. Blytt padre ha trovato sepoltura nel cimitero del Nostro Salvatore, ad Oslo. (it)

Blytt blev 1828 lektor och 1837 professor i botanik vid Kristiania universitet. Under största delen av den tid, som han var professor, företog han årligen botaniska resor i Norge. Han invaldes 1858 som ledamot av Vetenskapsakademien i Stockholm. Blytts främsta verk är Norges flora eller beskrivelser over de i Norge vildtvoxende karplanter, tillige med angivelse af de geografiske forhold, under hvilke de forekomme. I. (1861). Verket hade börjat utges redan 1847, med något annan titel, men underkastades sedan en fullständig omarbetning och kom att fortsättas av sonen.
