Caruthers) (ولد في 11 شباط / فبراير 1940) هو أستاذ أميركي متميز في الكيمياء الحيوية في جامعة كولورادو بولدر. حصل على درجة البكالوريوس في الكيمياء من جامعة ولاية آيوا في عام 1962 ثم على درجة الدكتوراه في الكيمياء الحيوية عام 1968 من جامعة نورث وسترن مع (روبرت ليتسنجر). وقد أجرى أبحاث ما بعد الدكتوراه في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا مع هار غوبند خورانا. أصبح أستاذاً مساعداً في عام 1973 وفي عام 1980 أستاذ الكيمياء الحيوية في جامعة كولورادو بولدر. Caruthers studierte an der Iowa State University mit dem Bachelor-Abschluss 1962 und wurde 1968 an der Northwestern University in Biochemie promoviert. Als Post-Doktorand war er bis 1970 an der University of Wisconsin und danach bis 1972 am Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ab 1973 war er Assistant Professor und ab 1980 Professor für Biochemie an der University of Colorado at Boulder. Er befasst sich mit Nukleinsäuren und entwickelte mit seinem Labor weltweit genutzte Methoden der Phosphoramidit-Synthese von DNA. Neben DNA entwickelte er in seinem Labor auch Methoden der RNA-Synthese und von DNA-Analoga und erforscht deren Anwendung. 1996 erhielt er einen Ehrendoktor (D. Sc.) der University of Nebraska. Er ist Mitglied der National Academy of Sciences, der American Academy of Arts and Sciences sowie der American Association for the Advancement of Science und erhielt die Prelog-Medaille, die Elliott Cresson Medal (1994), die National Medal of Science (2004), den NAS Award for Chemistry in Service to Society (2005), den NAS Award in Chemical Sciences (2014) und den ACS Award for Creative Invention (2014). 2018 wurde Caruthers in die National Inventors Hall of Fame aufgenommen. 1980/81 war er Guggenheim Fellow. Er ist korrespondierendes Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen. Seit 2019 zählt ihn der Medienkonzern Clarivate zu den Favoriten auf einen Nobelpreis (Clarivate Citation Laureates). - Marvin H. Caruthers (born February 11, 1940) is an American biochemist who is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Caruthers earned a B.S in chemistry at the Iowa State University in 1962 and a Ph.D in Biochemistry 1968 at Northwestern University with Robert Letsinger. He did his postdoctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Har Gobind Khorana. From 1973 he was Assistant Professor and in 1980 Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research is on nucleic acids. He and his research group developed methods for the phosphoramidite synthesis of DNA. Using this technique, his group was able to incorporate nucleotide analogs for functional group mutagenesis for a deeper understanding of nucleic acid biochemistry. In addition to DNA, he developed methods of RNA synthesis and also for DNA analogues and the applications of the resulting molecules. He was a co-founder of Amgen and Applied Biosystems with Leroy Hood. In 1994 Caruthers was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994. He received the National Medal of Science (2006), the NAS Award for Chemistry in Service to Society (2005) and the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences (2014).
