Choć wszyscy Malgasze posługują się jednym językiem, tj. malgaskim, to reprezentują mozaikę kulturową, na którą składa się 18 grup etnicznych różniących się używanymi dialektami (wzajemnie zrozumiałymi), częściowo kulturą, a także typem antropologicznym, zależnie od tego, jaką część ich przodków stanowili osadnicy z Azji Południowo-Wschodniej, a jaką Bantu lub Arabowie.
